Last night I went to the AGO General Idea party and watched a crowd as interesting as the huge show that extends awkwardly over two floors. The older artists who were part of the scene in the 60's and 70's were the earliest group to arrive. Over a glass of wine, Julia and I grouped them into 3 tribes - famous artists who really didn't care how they looked, famous artists who were dressed sorta like they they were in the early 80's but with recently bought clothes and hair extensions, and the ones who just looked like ordinary stylish people.
There was the tribe of art school students to whom General Idea is history - and through their eyes you could see the creative collective as a logical extension of the work Andy Warhol was doing. As A.A. Bronson was wrapping up his talk, the Gen X people working in the creative industries showed up, never too early to the party. We went upstairs to look at the show and by the time we came back downstairs, Walker Court was filled with fresh young gays wondering where the after party was going to be.
